James Stevens

During this time, he authored U.S. Army Special Forces information assurance security policies and played a key role in developing tactics, techniques, and procedures for the Army's new electronic surveillance program. His military career culminated in his selection to help establish the Army's first Cybersecurity division.

After leaving the military, James pursued undergraduate studies at the University of Washington, where he led pioneering research in energy harvesting, resulting in scientific publication. Upon graduation, he worked as a Senior Electrical Engineer for the Department of Defense, leading complex, multi-million-dollar engineering projects.

At Straylight, James applies this rare combination of hands-on engineering experience and operational discipline to the firm's patent practice. While he is not an attorney and does not represent clients in legal matters, he works closely with Straylight's attorneys to break down complex technologies, from embedded systems and signal processing to machine learning, into clear technical narratives that strengthen patent applications and support prosecution strategy. Inventors appreciate that he speaks their language, and clients benefit from having someone on the team who has actually built the kinds of systems they are trying to protect.
